7 cleaning tips to take you into Autumn

Autumn is a magical time of the year. The changing leaves and the cooler evenings make for a lovely bridge between our warm summers and chilly winters.

The change in season also presents a great time to do some seasonal cleaning as we prepare our homes for the winter. Below are 7 cleaning tips to help keep your home clean and ready for the season to come.

  1. Keep the dirt outside: Whether you live in a part of the country that has dry autumns and winters or wet ones, having doormats at your entrances is the first barrier against bringing excess dirt into your home and will help to keep your floors cleaner for longer.

  2. Clean upholstery and curtains: Part of your Autumn cleaning routine should included cleaning items such as upholstery, and especially curtains, that may not necessary be a part of your weekly or monthly cleaning routine. Having an appropriate cleaning schedule for these items will help to prevent the build-up of things such as dirt and dust mites.

  3. Don't forget your blinds: Whilst we're on the topic of curtains, adding blinds to your Autumn cleaning routine is also recommended. Blinds, especially darker ones, can hold a lot more dust than they let on. Whilst you are in the process of cleaning your curtains, why not give any blinds that you have in your home a good wipe down to get rid of any excess dirt.

  4. Clean your wardrobes: As we prepare to swap our summer and winter wardrobes around, use the opportunity to wipe down the surfaces and hard to reach places that are usually covered by clothes. Whilst the wardrobe is not a typical hot spot for dust, giving your shelves and and hanging rails a good wipe down will get rid of any dirt that is there and leave your cupboards and clothes smelling fresh.

  5. Defrost your freezer: A key part of freezer maintenance is defrosting it and keeping it clear of any excess ice build-up. Autumn is a great time of the year to do this as the lower temperatures will defrost your food at a slower rate than in summer, but it's not so cold that you'll need to wear gloves for the process like in winter.

  6. Clean your light fittings: Light fittings are great hosts to dirt and the occasional insect, and because of their hard to reach location, do not often form part of ones weekly cleaning routine. Whilst tending your home during your Autumn clean, why not add the light fittings to the list and get rid of any dust or bugs that they might have collected over time.

  7. Clean/ test your chimneys: If your home has a fireplace, chimney maintenance is a key part of keeping your home and loved ones safe. Autumn is a great time to clean and test your chimney for any issues ahead of the winter. This is especially true if you live near trees that are in the process of loosing leaves that could possibly obstruct your chimney.
